Organic gardening will require some extra research and active avoidance of chemicals. If you choose to follow the natural horticulture route, you may need to learn about factors, such as the soil’s pH balance and natural ways to fight off garden pests. If you are new to growing vegetables, then growing organic may take you a bit more time to learn. Be certain you do things the correct way, and get some help from the information offered below.

Shoveling clay soil is tiresome since clay is hard, and it can also stick to your shovel for twice the difficulty. Get better results in clay by rubbing car wax or floor wax onto the shovel, then buff off and dig. This will make your task easier because the clay won’t stick to the shovel. It will also keep your garden tool from rusting.

TIP! So you don’t shock the plants, you should gradually get them use to a change in the temperature and conditions. Put them outdoors in the sun for no more than two hours the first day.

When selecting among several varieties of a plant, choose the ones that will produce the largest yield. A lot of times a hybrid that will tolerate cold weather or disease will give you a higher output than heirlooms.

Give peas a head start by sprouting them indoors. If you were to plant them inside first, the seeds should germinate better. Your seedlings will be stronger, and this will mean they can withstand diseases and bug attacks. You can transplant the seedlings outside after they are sturdy enough.

Remember to place a layer of mulch over the soil around your vegetables, approximately 2 inches deep. Mulching helps keep moisture in the soil. This also helps reduce the appearance of weeds. This can prevent you from having to constantly pull weeds.

TIP! Shoveling clay is very difficult and lots of work because the clay is hard and sticks to the shovel, making it tough to handle. To make the clay soft so you aren’t working as hard, take floor or car wax and rub a light coat on the surface of the shovel using a clean cloth, then buff the surface.

Know when is the best time to harvest your vegetables. Each veggie has its own prime time for harvesting. For example, some plants, such as zucchini and baby peas, have the most flavor when harvested while young. Let your tomatoes, however, linger on the vine until they are fully ripe. It’s best to learn when the harvest time is for your vegetables.

If you know that you’ll be in the garden for an extended period of time, protect yourself from the sun with proper attire. Sunglasses, a nice shady hat, and sunscreen are very helpful. If you shield your skin from the sun correctly, your risk of sunburn and cancers will go down.

If you want to draw advantageous insects to your garden, plant some heather. Heather is quite alluring to bees; when spring comes along, it provides the bees with a source of nectar early. Because it is usually left alone, heather beds can become a home for spiders, beetles and other insects. Keeping this is mind, you need to wear gloves when you prune your heather!

TIP! If you see mildew that is powdery, stay away from expensive chemicals to treat it. Mix a solution of baking soda, water, and a tiny bit of dishwashing liquid.

Now, you shouldn’t get your hopes up and believe that a few tips are going to turn you into an instant professional gardener. However, these tips are a great starting point if you do plan to grow organically. As you implement these tips and hone your skills, you’ll be a professional green-thumb-holder in no time.
