Horticulture Without Chemicals: Everything You Need To Know About Organic Horticulture

When you take time to apply proper organic horticulture techniques and products, it really does show. It shows that you care about taking care of your plants and that you want them to grow up healthy. This is something that is admirable. However, there are always ways to learn new skills, and hone your existing ones. Here is some advice for you.

It is important to do your homework so you choose plants that produce higher yields. Many times, hybrid plants tend to resist disease, and tolerate the cold weather better than their traditional counterparts, resulting in higher yields.

TIP! All soil is not the same. You need to check the soil to make sure it’s the best for what you’re planting.

Use perennials resistant to slugs and snails. Slugs and snails will quickly destroy your garden if you let them. They gravitate towards perennials with smooth thin leaves, particularly on younger plants. Slugs and snails will leave some perennials alone, particularly those with a bad taste or tough, hairy leaves. These varieties include achillea, helleborus, heuchera, euphorbia, and campanula.

Plants that climb can hide fences and walls. Many climbers can cover the wall or fence in as little as one growing season. You don’t have to worry about removing trees between the climbing plants and the fence, because the trees don’t present obstacles to the climbers’ growth. Some people use climbers as a natural “ceiling” to arbors. Sometimes the plants will require being tied to supports, but some climbers will attach themselves naturally. If you’re looking for the most reliable varieties available, choose from clematis, wisteria, and climbing roses.

In the cold winter months, you can salvage certain plants by bringing them into the house. Choose the plants that are most likely to survive. Carefully dig near the roots and transfer those plants into a flower pot.

TIP! Try growing some cat grass or wheat grass in the vicinity of the plants that your cat likes to eat. You can also put something on top of the soil around the plants that has an offensive smell to cats, such as mothballs or citrus peel.

Remove your garden’s weeds! Weeds steal nutrients from plants, robbing a garden of its potential harvest. For this task, try using white vinegar. White vinegar is natural, very inexpensive, and can really kill the weeds! Apply it full strength to any areas where weeds are a problem.

For showy flowers throughout the spring and summer, plant plenty of bulbs. Bulbs are generally very simple to grow and hearty, as well; they will continue to grow for years. Bulbs bloom during different seasons, if you pick them carefully you will have flowers almost all year.

If you have the right tools and products, you can use these tips to help your garden. You are ready to start your own garden. The basic tips provided here will give you a good start in building your own body of knowledge as you work. You might even have learned something you hadn’t known before to use in your organic garden.
