Organic products are usually tastier and healthier than other foods. Try growing your own organic produce instead of spending a bundle. Below is a selection of organic horticulture tips that will help you to start harvesting delicious, healthy produce at home.

Make sure to lay the sod properly. Your soil should be prepared before you lay the sod. Remove any weeds, and break the soil up into a fine tilth. Compact the soil gently but firmly to be certain that it is indeed flat. Make sure the soil is thoroughly moist. Sod should be staggered in rows, the joints offsetting from each other. After the sod has been flattened to an even surface, you can use soil to fill any remaining gaps. Water the sod every day for a couple of weeks. Then it should be rooted well and ready for foot traffic.

TIP! Plant some perennials in your garden that repel slugs. Your plants can be destroyed by slugs and snails overnight.

Clay is naturally hard, and can can stick to a shovel making it frustrating to work with. Use a thin coat of floor or car wax on your shovel, then buff it with a nice clean cloth to make dealing with clay soil easier. The clay won’t stick to it, and the end will not rust as an added bonus.

Flower Bed

Use both biennials and annuals to add color to your flower bed. Fast-growing annuals and biennials can brighten up a flower bed, and allow you to change the look from season to season and year to year. In an area that is sunny, they make good plants to place in the gaps found between shrubs and perennials. There are many flowers you can plant in these gaps. Try marigolds, petunias or sunflowers for a brighter garden.

TIP! When powdery mildew appears on your plants, you should not rush out to purchase a costly chemical treatment. Mix a little liquid soap and baking soda in water.

Bring some plants into your home to protect them against winter weather. Your best bet would be try to save the best or most hearty plants. Carefully loosen the dirt around the roots, then transfer the plant into a pot filled with the same soil.

Before you even start planting the garden, check the soil. Pay a small fee to have your soil analyzed, and you’ll be glad that you did when you understand what nutrients your soil is lacking. Cooperative Extension departments often offer this testing service. It is a worthwhile effort so a garden can be productive on the first year of planting.

Be sure to weed your garden. If you have weeds in your garden, it will not be as nice as it could be. Try using white vinegar to get rid of weeds. White vinegar will definitely kill the weeds! So, if weed pulling is tiring you out, spray a white vinegar solution all over them.

Coffee Grounds

For areas with high alkaline, mix coffee grounds into the soil. Coffee grounds add acidity to the soil and are very cheap. Balanced soil will produce more flavorful, crisp vegetables and greens.

Stop wasting your money on produce that isn’t up to standard. Utilize the advice you’ve read in this article and start growing fruits and vegetables of your own.
