Establishing an organic garden is a smart way to work towards a healthier diet. You do have to put in some effort, though. This probably has you wondering where to start your own garden.

Sod should be laid correctly. Before laying the sod, have your soil prepared. Remove weeds and break your soil until all the clumps are gone. Compact the soil lightly and firmly, and be sure to create a flat surface. Thoroughly moisten the soil. Lay the sod down in alternated rows, keeping the joints set off from one another. Sod should be firm and have an even, flat surface without gaps. The sod needs to be watered daily for two weeks, by which time it will be rooted and ready to walk on.

TIP! Do not improperly lay your new sod. Start by preparing your soil with care.

Turn the handles of tools you have on hand into rulers to make measurements in your garden. Tools that can be used for more than one task are quite handy to own. Lay the handles on the floor, then run the measuring tape down next to them. Then, with a permanent marker, you want to label distances. Next time you are working in the garden, you will have a large ruler at your fingertips!

Plant slug-proof perennials. If slugs or snails find their favorite perennials in your garden, they’ll snack all night. When you wake up in the morning, there will be very little left of your plants. These pests are particularly fond of young perennials and those varieties with leaves that are tender, smooth, and thin. Perennials that have thick, furry leaves and unpleasant tastes are less likely to attract slugs and snails. Several good choices include heuchera, campanula, achillea, and euphorbia.

Before you even start planting the garden, check the soil. You can actually get an analysis of soil for a little fee, and with the report you get back you can figure out how to create a vibrant garden by enriching it properly. The cost of the analysis will be easily offset by the benefits of a healthy and vibrant crop.

TIP! Use pots to start your plants, then transfer them to a garden when they become seedlings. By allowing them to sprout first, you are increasing the odds of a seedling reaching maturity.

Pre-soak your seeds through the night in a dark area. You then want to place a small amount of seeds in a container that’s smaller and then fill it up with water to the top. This way, your seeds are well-hydrated and can start growing with a head start. This way, the seeds will have a much better shot at survival once they are planted.

As you’ve read, organic horticulture requires work, effort, and research so that you can grow organic plants. Also, to get the best results, you must stay focused and keep up with it. Now, after reading the tips from this article, you have the knowledge necessary in order to be a successful organic gardener.
