When Eva moved into her Brooklyn studio apartment seven years ago, the space suited her needs: It’s centrally located in the trendy Williamsburg neighborhood and she has a great landlord. A Cheerful 450-Square-Foot Studio in Historic Baltimore — House Tour

Name: Anna Saffer and Clementine the cat
Location: Mt. Vernon — Baltimore, Maryland
Size: 450 square feet
Years lived in: 1 year, renting

At only 450 square feet, it takes some flexibility to make this small space (an apartment carved from a historical Mt. Vernon townhouse) work. Somehow, Anna has managed to do that, despite several space challenges — like the kitchen being too small for the refrigerator. In fact, there is hardly room to move around in the kitchen at all, as it’s basically a large closet. Thankfully, the beautiful living space makes up for that and more.

A Plant & Vintage-Filled Chicago Garden Unit — House Tour

Name: Courtney Frederick, and her cats Bruce and Pete
Location: Humboldt Park — Chicago, Illinois
Size: 1,100 square feet
Years lived in: 5 years, renting

Courtney found her apartment by chance five years ago. It was a cold and snowy Chicago night when a friend called her to come check out the apartment. She drove there in the middle of the night, barely making it on time after her car got stuck in the snow. The apartment had been vacant for a year, so the windows were covered with newspaper and the kitchen cabinets were in terrible shape. Because it was empty for so long, the electricity was shut off, so Courtney used her phone’s flashlight to look around. “Have you ever looked at an apartment in the pitch black without heat? It’s not great,” she says. Despite that, Courtney took a chance and moved in, transforming it into a warm and beautiful space she now shares with her two cats, rescued plants, and her favorite possessions.

Two Artists Share a “West by Southwest” Oakland Apartment — House Tour

Name: James Sterling Pitt & Lauren Douglas
Location: Piedmont Avenue — Oakland, California
Size: 1,200 square feet (+ an additional 1,2,00 square foot basement workspace)
Years lived in: 3 years, rented

When friends walk into James and Lauren’s Oakland apartment, they’re transported to a quiet, soothing and calm space. The unit itself is tucked behind a larger building located off of Piedmont Avenue’s commercial strip. There are big, green bushes and trees surrounding their apartment, so it has a rural vibe yet is just steps from amenities you’d find in an urban neighborhood. “We moved into the one-bedroom apartment in front and then transitioned into the back house three years ago when our neighbors moved,” Lauren says. She and James say it was a dream to move into a space that is immersed in nature, quiet, and filled with light.

A Classic, Renovated Home in Beijing with Modern Updates — House Tour

Name: Ashley Chu and Alex Acker
Location: Beixinqiao — Beijing, China
Size: 950 square feet
Years lived in: 3.5 years, renting

Beijing is famous for its centuries-old hutongs — the winding alleyways that once made up the main arteries of the city. They were filled with traditional courtyard homes until the spaces were divided or destroyed to make room for a swelling population. These days, what’s left of the ancient hutongs are enticing China expats and a younger generation of locals with their charm. But moving in comes with risks: namely bugs, cold winters, bad plumbing, water damage, and lack of space. So when Ashley Chu and Alex Acker invited a Chinese friend and her mother to come visit their 100-year-old home in the heart of the hutongs, the mother was horrified.

A Small Shanghai Lane House — House Tour

Name: Julie Morel
Location: French Concession — Shanghai, China
Size: 400 square feet
Years lived in: 3 years, renting

Julie’s apartment love story all started with a radiator. No one moves to Shanghai — or spends even a night there — without hearing grave warnings from residents about the damp, drafty homes that skimp on central heating. Tenants in century-old flats depend on space heaters and electric blankets, or take solace in trips a little farther south. Unless, of course, they happen to strike gold, which is exactly what Julie did.
