Metal Gear Survive Review in Progress – So Far, So Dull

Metal Gear Survive launched today, and because Konami didn’t provide early access to critics, so has our review. We’re working to get the full review published as soon as possible (exactly when will depend on how much there is to do), but until then, here are some launch-day impressions.

One of the first things you see when you reach the bland, zombie-infested alternate Earth where Metal Gear Survive takes place is the huge, twisted chunk of The Phantom Pain’s Seychelles Mother Base. But if Survive is set after Ground Zeroes and before The Phantom Pain, as its opening cutscene suggests, this makes no sense. Diamond Dogs wasn’t formed until nearly a decade after the destruction of Militaires Sans Frontières’ Caribbean Mother Base, so how can this be here? Is this an intentional mystery meant to fuel Survive’s oddly misplaced fantasy storyline, or a mistake borne of recycling pieces of a better game? These are the questions evoked by the opening of Survive’s thus far tedious single-player campaign. But even when you strip out the nagging continuity questions and just take it for what it is, you’re still just left with a mediocre base-building action-survival game without much else going for it.

The Biggest, Baddest Super-Weapons in Gaming

The gaming world is filled with more evil super-weapons than an 80s spy movie. We’ve got more maniacs, evil geniuses, misguided scientists and evil super-beings than we know what to do with – and most of them want to destroy humanity in a hundred different ways.

The bad guys in video games have tried everything from enslaving all the fluffy animals in the Green Hill Zone, to turning humans into Stroggs and generally trying to blow everything sky-high.

So to celebrate all the heroes that have foiled dastardly plots, and all the evil beings who plotted them, we wanted to take a look at some of the biggest, baddest super-weapons that have threatened to put the bad guys on top.

100 Reasons Why Monster Hunter World is the Best Monster Hunter to Date

Capcom really went back to the drawing board for Monster Hunter World, and the results are sensational. The team made so many improvements to the Monster Hunter formula there’s almost too many to list – but that didn’t stop us trying. Here are 100 reasons why Monster Hunter World is the best in the series to date. (Our full review is here too. )

01 – 4K Fidelity

Monster Hunter rose to prominence on portable systems: the PSP and the 3DS. The leap from 240p to 4K delivers a long-overdue upgrade that borders on sensory overload.

02 – Staggering Detail in Monster Rendering

Dragon Ball FighterZ: First DLC Characters Revealed

The first two characters to join the Dragon Ball FighterZ roster as DLC are Broly and Bardock.

The announcement was spotted by Ryokutya2089  in the latest issue of V-Jump (via Gematsu ). While a release date and price for the fighters have yet to be revealed, information about their Super Special Attacks was provided.

Bardock’s Super Special Attack is called “Revenger Assault” and sees him transform into a Super Saiyan before charging forward into his opponent. Meanwhile, Broly’s Super Special Attack, which consumes three bars of the energy gauge, is called “Gigantic Meteor” and fires a ball of energy.

Secret of Mana HD Remaster Review: All The Joy of The Original

You know what this Secret of Mana HD remaster makes me want most? A full Secret of Mana remake. While I love how this remaster has all the heart and joy of the SNES original from 1993, it misses an opportunity to elevate this classic RPG by bringing it up to modern standards in areas like AI, combat balancing, and even graphics. The result is a charming but clumsy 20ish-hour adventure that both frustrates and delights.

Much of this push and pull starts with the new art style, which attempts to convert the original’s sprites into 3D. On the one hand, Mana’s world design is scrumptious eye candy: almost everywhere you go you’re greeted with scenic fields bursting with flora and coated in cheerful, sugary pastels like so much colorful caramel. Wolves trot through clusters of glittering, multihued trees while quaint wooden signs point travelers toward their destination so they don’t get turned around by an endless procession of right angles. Even the imposing palaces guarded by hostile ducks wearing kettle helmets (don’t ask) look inviting when decorated with beautiful stained glass windows. These lovely settings feel like chicken soup for the soul.

Shadow of War: Blade of Galadriel DLC Review – Does it Work Without The Nemesis System?

If you’re looking to put a new spin on a winning formula, you probably don’t want to leave out your secret ingredient. Monolith does deserve credit for trying to make the Blade of Galadriel DLC feel like something other than just more of the same Shadow of War gameplay, but wielding Galadriel’s Light can’t hold a candle to the domination and Nemesis systems it sidelines.

Blade of Galadriel picks up after the third act, with Eltariel recovering Celebrimbor’s ring on the tower at Barad-dur and heading off to fight the remaining Nazgul on behalf of Galadriel. She’s still as bland a character as you’d expect a female elf version of Talion to be, so don’t expect any big twists, turns, or character moments from her. What few interesting moments there are come from brief appearances by Talion, though they serve only to repeat things we’ve already seen in slightly greater detail and, of course, to retread more lines from characters from the movies and books.
