Take a Peek Into This Serene San Francisco Apartment — House Tour

Name: Mohammad and Rachael Gorjestani
Location: Western Addition — San Francisco, California
Size: 800 square feet
Years lived in: 3 years, rented

Mohammad and Rachel’s San Francisco apartment is so cozy and serene, it’s easy to forget that it’s right next to a busy intersection at the center of the city. The original hardwood floors add warmth to the space, and the view of greenery in their spacious backyard (a true luxury in San Francisco) is beautiful. They realize they’re lucky to have stumbled upon this apartment after a long tedious search. “We knew exactly the kind of apartment we wanted, but given the housing crisis and crazy costs of San Francisco, it took a while to find a place that fit the bill and we could afford,” they say. “We got very lucky!”

A Colorful “Tongue-in-Chic” San Francisco Apartment — House Tour

Name: Ginevra Held and her mom, Beverly
Location: Richmond — San Francisco, California
Size: 1,200 square feet
Years lived in: Ginevra — 1.5 years; Beverly — 10 years, owned

Ginevra has been surrounded by art all of her life. Her mom has a PhD in art history, so Ginevra has been to countless art museums around the world—an amenity that has obviously influenced her style. Her brother is also a glass artist and craftsman who often collaborates with her to execute design ideas. Just recently, he drew all over a Restoration Hardware ottoman in the living room at Ginevra’s request, adding that extra “oomph” she strives for in each room. Clearly, the house is buzzing with creativity. But it’s thanks to Ginevra’s unique point of view as an interior designer that each space feels new and unexpected.

A Beautiful Bay Area Rental is a Great Match for a Cute Couple — House Tour

Name: Walter and Adam Ryon
Location: San Leandro, California
Size: 950 square feet
Years lived in: 1 year, rented

Walter was working and living in Abu Dhabi when Adam first spotted the building they now call home. Finding a home from a distance was difficult, but when Adam drove by the building, Adam thought this one might be a good fit. It was a quintessential 1950s apartment building that was recently updated, and Adam felt their style was reflected both on the inside and outside. Another bonus was its great location, with downtown and public transportation nearby, giving them easy access to nearby San Francisco for work and fun. “We wanted a place that would allow us easy access to the city everyday, but could be our nightly escape with enough room for the dog and the whole family,” they say.

A Boiler Room Turned Perfect, Tiny House

We’re big fans of adaptive re-use and also of small spaces, and sometimes, when we’re lucky, the stars align and bring us a project that’s the perfect synthesis of both. Like this 94-square-foot, 98-year-old boiler room that a clever San Francisco architect turned into the perfect tiny house.

A Teeny But Impressively Organized Studio Apartment — House Call

“When I decided I was ready to live on my own after years of living with roommates, I needed a place where I could continue to have dinner parties and space for guests to feel comfortable — but finding that at an affordable price point in San Franciso is challenging,” writes Chelsea Drenick. “I work as a structural engineer, and have an eye for space planning, and decided to hunt for a studio apartment where I could make a real separation between a sleeping space and an entertaining space. When I saw this place, measured the closet, and determined my bed could fit in it, I knew it was perfect. Even though I live in a studio, I can have several friends over without them ever feeling like they are in my bedroom, and my small couch pulls out into a bed so I can even host an overnight guest.”

An Airbnb Content Manager’s Chic San Francisco Studio — House Tour

Name: Holly
Location: The Mission — San Francisco, California
Size: 650 square feet
Years lived in: 3 years, renting

The first thing you notice when you open the door to Holly’s apartment in San Francisco’s popular Mission neighborhood is the light in the hallway that runs two-thirds of the length of the space. Windows all along the right side — some stained glass — make it feel very airy and ethereal. And the style with which she chooses to adorn the walls — delicate, simple, and thoughtful — spills into the whole apartment. Overall, her place gives off a bit of a Parisian vibe, which is ironic, since when I mentioned my impression, Holly said she’s never actually been to Paris. Though as a Content Manager at Airbnb, she’s likely seen a lot of the style that goes into Parisian homes as she goes about her daily work.

A Pinterest Employee’s 232-Square-Foot San Francisco Studio — House Tour

Name: Cindy Zhang
Location: Soma — San Francisco, California
Size: 232 square feet
Years lived in: Rented less than 1 year

Finding a nice, affordable apartment has become a challenge for anyone moving to San Francisco. When Cindy moved in 2016 from San Diego, she was super happy to find a cute little studio in the hip neighborhood of Soma. A mix of new buildings and old warehouses, housing mostly start-ups, Soma is quickly becoming a residential neighborhood.

Cindy’s studio shows you don’t have to live in a huge space to live comfortably. She drew inspiration from Scandinavian design, contemporary typography and vintage posters to decorate her small home. But she also heavily considered furniture shapes and sizes to complement the layout of her studio; Cindy’s small studio actually feels quite spacious. And she’s carved out dedicated areas for work, relaxing, hosting friends, and even for her beloved piano. Besides working at Pinterest, she is also a proud member of the band Mino.
