10 Bathrooms Inspired by Design’s Most Daring Decade

The phrase “’80s bathroom” may conjure a bit of a shudder — along with images of cracked square tile and particle-board vanities. But right now we’re feeling inspired by an entirely different kind of ’80s bathroom, one not necessarily built in the ’80s but definitely inspired by the decade.

Lately, the influence of Memphis — the postmodern collective that defined avant-garde design during that time — is everywhere, so it seems inevitable that those bright colors, speckled finishes, and playful geometric shapes would eventually make their way to the bathroom. The resulting spaces might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but you have to agree that they’re anything but boring.

Why Wet Rooms Might Be Better Than Traditional American Bathrooms

Bathrooms are a little bit different all over the world. Bathrooms in Europe often have a hand sprayer but no showerhead. Many Japanese bathrooms have a tub inside the shower. In Pittsburgh, some houses have toilets in the basement, right out in the open . And in other countries, there is a particular style of bathroom known as the wet room.

Love It or Hate It, This Design Trend is Back in Bathrooms

It was absolutely everywhere in the early 2000s — tiny square tiles, often in mosaics of varying shades, with a bit of an iridescent sheen. Those same tiles were big in the ’70s and ’80s, too, although then you were more likely to see them in shades of white or beige. And since almost everything that once falls out of fashion will eventually cycle back, I’m starting to see those tiny tiles crop up once again.

Genius Disguises for Textured Popcorn Ceilings

We don’t give ceilings enough credit for the effect they have on a room. Whether they draw the eye upward with bold paint, or add detailed definition with molding, ceilings help set the mood for your home. Even if you have a beautifully decorated room, a popcorn ceiling instantly casts a dated vibe over your hard work. The good news is that you have options when it comes to transforming this ugly surface into something that adds to your room, instead of distracting from it.

HGTV’s “Rehab Crazy” Stars On What It Takes to Turn An Old House Around — HGTV’s “Rehab Crazy” Stars On Turning an Old House Around

Cathy, and her husband Garrett, are just two design lovers living a “quiet, country life” (her words) in Washington state. Here are a few things that that quiet country life entails: rehabbing a 105-year-old farmhouse into their family home, flipping a 117-year-old house , and working on an HGTV pilot . Here’s what you can expect.

Before & After: This Bathroom Looks Great, But Wait Until You See the Floor

This “Before & After” involves a beautiful Brooklyn brownstone with a bathroom that had seen better days. While certainly not as dire as some “before” bathrooms we’ve seen it had an uninspired design, a clunky sliding metal door that broke up the space, and a distinct lack of storage — especially for a bathroom of this size.

This Backsplash Trend is A Budget Lover’s Best Friend

There is so much beautiful tile in the world. But for those of us on a budget, so much of it just isn’t within reach: most is just way too expensive to use on a whole wall, a floor, or even an entire backsplash. Perhaps this is why we’re noticing more micro backsplashes in the kitchen and bathroom lately. They are a little tiny opportunity to do something fun in a very practical way. And, for each one, a little bit of tile goes a very long way.
