We Can’t Get Enough: A Big Gallery of Beautiful Scandinavian Style Living Rooms

It’s no secret that we love the minimal elegance of Scandinavian style. The hallmarks of the look—white painted walls, pale woods, black accents, cozy textiles and tons of gray—are solid basics to admire (or build off of for something a little funkier). This Northern European aesthetic speaks to the dark days of winter the region is known for, creating as much light inside when it’s in short supply outside the windows. Dashes of color (like bright canary yellow) are reminders that spring will indeed on day return. To celebrate our love of the look, we’ve collected Scandi-inspired living rooms from Sweden, Denmark, Colorado, California, and beyond that have a perfect balance of clean minimalism and inviting hygge.

Something Called a Pajama Lounge Is Trending (& You’re Going to Want One)

There’s a new term roaming the corridors of the internet that made our ears perk up the second we heard it and we think you’re going to like it, too. It’s called a “pajama lounge”, and we want one. The idea is nothing new, though: growing up in suburbia, you may have had an upstairs loft or living room where the kids studied, watched TV maybe before heading down to the kitchen for a bowl of cereal if your home was spacious enough. But the space has gotten a bit of a marketing makeover, because “pajama lounge” is far more enticing of a phrase than “open space at the top of the stairs.”

Before and After: The Secret to Taking Wood-Paneled Walls Down a Notch

Warm, earthy wood is such a beautiful material to have in your home…until it’s not. There are no rules about how much wood a home can handle, but you know it when you see it. When Carina Romano bought this cabin in the Catskills with two friends, Amanda Jaffe and Kate McCann, the location won them over, but the amount of ’80s-era wood-paneled walls was overwhelming. Thankfully, these creative women were able to transform what could have been a lumber-induced nightmare into a modern, cozy retreat. And best of all, it didn’t take much to tip the timber scales from hardwood horror show to fabulously forest-inspired.

10 Essential IKEA Pieces for Small Living Rooms

From the time I discovered the store, those tiny-apartment vignettes (how three people live in 181 square feet!) were my favorite part of going to IKEA. (Okay, maybe besides the hot dogs at the exit cafe. Don’t judge me.) So it’s no particular surprise to me that IKEA excels at making products that are perfect for small spaces. Some are designed to solve specific small-space woes: others just happen to be very versatile, and have been pressed into service in tiny apartments by some very clever folks. With that in mind, here are our favorite IKEA products for making the most of a small living room.

Before & After: A Family Home Goes from Cavernous to Cozy — Professional Project

It’s not a problem that many people have in New York, but this Tribeca apartment was almost too big. Sans furniture, the side-by-side living rooms seemed intimidating and cavernous. Before & After: A Living Room Goes From Perfectly Fine to Flat-Out Perfect

This living room was perfectly nice before the owners undertook a renovation: mid-century modern furniture, gorgeous hardwood floors, white walls, attractive art and accessories. Buying A Sofa Online Seemed Risky, But It Was The Best Thing Ever

My family and I live in a remote area—the nearest town has 200 people—so when it came time to replace our falling-apart sofa, our IRL shopping options were very limited unless we wanted to devote our lives to driving to furniture stores. The closest shops were perfectly respectable but lacked a certain flair. It seemed like ordering a sofa online was our only good option, and I’m thrilled it was, because it ended up working out great. Buying a couch online may sound terribly risky, but I have a few helpful hints—from my own experience—that might help you if you’re considering your own online purchase.
