This Backsplash Trend is A Budget Lover’s Best Friend

There is so much beautiful tile in the world. But for those of us on a budget, so much of it just isn’t within reach: most is just way too expensive to use on a whole wall, a floor, or even an entire backsplash. Perhaps this is why we’re noticing more micro backsplashes in the kitchen and bathroom lately. They are a little tiny opportunity to do something fun in a very practical way. And, for each one, a little bit of tile goes a very long way.

Before and After: From Fast Food Floors to Old World Charm

The designer of this renovation described the kitchen before as, “dark, oddly angled and with what looks like fast food restaurant tile on the floor.” The client wanted to brighten and update the kitchen while making sure that it fit in perfectly with the rest of the 100-year-old home. Before & After: A Perfectly Nice Kitchen Gets Unbelievably Better

As kitchens go, this one isn’t too shabby. There are really nice white countertops, classic subway tile on the backsplash, and basic wood cabinets that look perfectly sound and in good condition. There’s no horribly dated light fixtures, no crappy peeling wallpaper, or any odd woodwork that needs to be ripped out. Even the walls are white and ready to go. Not much you can do to improve this space, right? So very, very wrong.

We’re Transfixed by this Kitchen Sink Drain that Makes Cleaning Easier

It’s a sign of my age that I get crazy excited about the little things at home. Sure, the frivolous things of my youth still hold some sway, but all I really want is a good vacuum that will suck up rogue animal fur, and a sink that cleans itself. I can probably manage the vacuum, but a self-cleaning sink is most likely not in the cards. That’s ok though, because this one from Elkay is the next best thing.
