“Flea Market Chic” Modern Style in the Philippines — House Tour

Name: Jar and Kay (and their 5-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter)
Location: Quezon City, Philippines
Size: 375 square meters
Years lived in: Owned 3 months

Jar writes: “This is my wife and I’s first house together. We worked closely with our architect [Denise De Castro of DDC-Vida] to achieve a sustainable structure that would cater to a growing family. We were able to incorporate a lot of natural light and ventilation with a pocket garden in the middle of the home. We also have a rainwater harvest system that saves water for garden use. I’m a photographer and the architect wanted the house to be a ‘museum of light’ so she intentionally had light enter every room a different way. Solar panels also help us save on our electric bill.”

She had chanced upon the property when it was totally derelict and still in the very beginning stages of a renovation. But it was the incredible Victorian staircase that sold Sarah on this 1901 naval cottage…and made her put in an offer.

An Interior Designer’s Simple & Modern Beijing Flat — House Tour

Name: Coro Urdaneta and Marco Cortavitarte
Location: Sanlitun — Beijing, China
Size: 1,500 square feet
Years lived in: 2 years, renting

It’s hard to find an expat in Beijing who doesn’t know about the Moka Bros , or the Venezuelan siblings behind it. When the restaurant first opened in 2013, it flipped the capital’s healthy café scene on its head, largely thanks to its refreshingly bold and trendy creative concept. The woman behind that design, and that of many other successful eateries in the city, is Coro Urdaneta of her namesake studio CoromotoAD . With more than 30 projects behind her in just a few years, it’s hardly a surprise that some of this design wisdom — as well as the furnishings themselves — would spill over into the Beijing home she shares with her husband Marco Cortavitarte.

Maria came to live in this apartment when she moved from Madrid with her two children two years ago. The apartment once belonged to her grandmother, so Maria remembers fondly coming to play here with her cousins when she was a toddler. The space looks quite different these days, though. When her grandmother lived here, it was heavy on dark wood. Maria has painted everything all white, transforming a once-dark home to a beautiful, bright and elegant space.

Name: Starry Xiao
Location: Guozijian — Beijing, China
Size: 320 square feet
Years lived in: 9 months, renting

Starry Xiao’s hutong home is nestled among the throngs of mom and pop stores selling incense for visitors to Beijing’s famous Lama Temple. Within its blue walls, however, it radiates a completely different kind of aroma. A local chef, Starry is known to make use of every corner of his tiny kitchen to whip up elaborate brunches for his girlfriend. Meals are punctuated by the many fragrances from his extensive candle collection, such as books in a library and oak moss. All of this adds another layer of depth to a snug loft, which makes up for the lack of floor space.
