The Cool California Home of the Founders of Health-Ade Kombucha — House Tour

Name: Daina , Justin and Hendricks Trout of Health-Ade Kombucha
Location: Mar Vista, California
Size: 3,100 square feet
Years lived in: 5 months, owned

It seems difficult to believe that Daina and Justin Trout, co-founders of popular drink brand, Health-Ade Kombucha , only moved into their stunning Westside home five months ago. With each room more pulled together and well designed than the last, it seems as if this effortlessly styled home would have taken years to get every detail right. The combination of California boho meets mid-century chic hits all the right notes, while the open and airy aspects of the house play right into the bright nature of its residents.

A Los Angeles Musician’s Colorful, Playful & Nerdy Apartment — House Tour

Name: Juan Velasquez
Location: Highland Park — Los Angeles, California
Size: 460 square feet
Years lived in: 5 years, rented

About five years ago, the house Juan shared with two friends in Los Angeles’ Eagle Rock neighborhood was sold, forcing him to move out. That’s when he stumbled upon this current apartment in Highland Park. It was at the top of his budget, and as a punk musician and record store employee at the time, he says it was out of reach because he had terrible credit. But with some extra help from his mom as a co-signer, he was on his way to acquiring his first “grown-up” apartment.

It’s palpable and irresistible, and will not be ignored. New Orleans, you excite me. New Orleans, I’m hungry. New Orleans, I love you.” These are the words of blogger and cookbook author Joy Wilson, written in a 2015 post on her popular food blog Joy the Baker.

“My home is a snapshot of my life…I try to incorporate memories from my family, travels, city, state and friends while making it look very personal and uniquely me. A One-of-a-Kind Ontario Home Infused with Fun — House Tour

Name: Julien Marit , husband Mike, daughters Kibale, Glacier and Salem. And pup Madden
Location: Milton — Ontario Canada
Size: 2,100 square feet
Years Lived In: 12 years, owned

“I believe that a home is not just a playground for living but also a composition of all who live there. I love walking into a space that has a story in the design; preferably a personal story,” wrote landscape designer and artist Julien Marit. It’s not hyperbole to say that Julien and her family have “authored” every square inch of their home, a (formerly) cookie-cutter house in Ontario. “People tell us how much you can feel the family love in our house, which I believe is due to its sense of playfulness. It’s a world of exploration that says a lot about who we are, where we have been and what’s important to us.”

A Graphic Designer’s Collected Seattle Home — House Tour

Name: Jordan
Location: Capitol Hill — Seattle, Washington
Size: 1,000 square feet
Years lived in: 3 years, renting

A friend of Jordan’s once called her a professional appreciator, and that is just exactly the right title to give this creative force of a woman. She’s a freelance graphic designer, but I first knew of Jordan as a source of restaurant recommendations via her Instagram account, Local Trove (there are so many great spots in Capitol Hill that it’s tough to keep track — it’s important to have sources on the inside). Soon, I came to think of her as a source for great shops, unique art, interesting people, and inspiration.

A Kip&Co Founder’s Utterly Stunning, Modern Melbourne Home — House Tour

Name: Alex McCabe , her boyfriend Bobby, and their three dogs Freddy, Jimmy and Gerald
Location: St Kilda — Melbourne, Australia
Size: 1,345 square feet
Years lived in: 8 years, owned

About half of the furniture in Alex McCabe’s house is vintage. There’s a “deliciously worn” 1970s brown leather lotus couch, a 1950s Danish dining table set and some super comfortable vintage armchairs. There are 1960s papier mâché pots from India, miniature corn ceramic men from the Rose Bowl Flea Market, and vintage German pottery. But it’s not all old things; Alex renovated the house last year, and the furniture and material choices are modern, unusual, and extraordinarily inspiring.

A “Renovated from the Floors Up” Earthy California Bohemian Home — House Tour

Name: Vera Claire and Sam Cheadle
Location: Bayview — San Francisco, California
Size: 1,200 square feet
Years lived in: 3 years, owned

For Vera and Sam, the past three years have been filled with the never-ending process of renovating and personalizing their home. The fact that Sam — the acting handyman and contractor — has no experience with renovating is even more impressive. “We’ve poured our energy into renovating it from the floors on up, with plenty of ‘Oh shit, that’s not what I envisioned’ moments along the way.” Despite those hiccups, their home in its current state is bright, inspired, and personal — and there’s more to come.

A Product Designer’s Colorful Shanghai Home — House Tour

Name: Alexander Åhnebrink
Location: Former French Concession — Shanghai, China
Size: 3,200 square feet
Years lived in: 1 year, renting

When Alexander moved to China with his wife four years ago, he dreamed of a traditional courtyard home. He was met with reality: finding one that didn’t need serious renovations was next to impossible and they would be settling for a more modern serviced apartment in the city center. Fast forward three years, and they found themselves embarking on the home search once again, this time in Shanghai. With a growing family, Alexander now really wanted to prioritize finding a special place that felt like home, and soon he and his wife found themselves looking for houses instead of flats. They eventually did just that, and in a city known for its historic lane houses, finding a space that had already been remodeled by local design firm A00 was a pleasant surprise — one that always manages to stun visitors when the Åhnebrinks entertain.
