A Candy-Colored Seattle Studio — House Tour

Name: Suki
Location: Queen Anne — Seattle, Washington
Size: 677 square feet
Years lived in: Owned 9 months

Before she started decorating, Seattle homeowner Suki set out to create a space that felt like a vacation home, which worked out nicely for me since it was an especially gloomy day the afternoon I showed up to snap some pictures. I was desperately in need of a mini getaway and Suki’s condo totally delivered.

A Colorful “Tongue-in-Chic” San Francisco Apartment — House Tour

Name: Ginevra Held and her mom, Beverly
Location: Richmond — San Francisco, California
Size: 1,200 square feet
Years lived in: Ginevra — 1.5 years; Beverly — 10 years, owned

Ginevra has been surrounded by art all of her life. Her mom has a PhD in art history, so Ginevra has been to countless art museums around the world—an amenity that has obviously influenced her style. Her brother is also a glass artist and craftsman who often collaborates with her to execute design ideas. Just recently, he drew all over a Restoration Hardware ottoman in the living room at Ginevra’s request, adding that extra “oomph” she strives for in each room. Clearly, the house is buzzing with creativity. But it’s thanks to Ginevra’s unique point of view as an interior designer that each space feels new and unexpected.

A Beautiful Bay Area Rental is a Great Match for a Cute Couple — House Tour

Name: Walter and Adam Ryon
Location: San Leandro, California
Size: 950 square feet
Years lived in: 1 year, rented

Walter was working and living in Abu Dhabi when Adam first spotted the building they now call home. Finding a home from a distance was difficult, but when Adam drove by the building, Adam thought this one might be a good fit. It was a quintessential 1950s apartment building that was recently updated, and Adam felt their style was reflected both on the inside and outside. Another bonus was its great location, with downtown and public transportation nearby, giving them easy access to nearby San Francisco for work and fun. “We wanted a place that would allow us easy access to the city everyday, but could be our nightly escape with enough room for the dog and the whole family,” they say.

After living in a much bigger place (where he never felt at ease), Lucas finally found his home a year ago in this one bedroom apartment over an avenue in the Vicente Lopez neighborhood. The furniture that seemed to be floating all over his old apartment now felt at home in this much cozier place.

A Bright Industrial Oakland Loft with ’90s Sitcom Vibes — House Tour

Name: Tam-Anh and Ricky
Location: Jack London Square — Oakland, California
Size: 1,100 square feet
Years lived in: 1 year, renting

At the end of 2016, Tam-Anh and Ricky decided to move in together, so they scoured Craigslist for apartments and began their search for a new home — an arduous task in the Bay Area’s competitive rental market. A few listings in, a description caught their attention: original loft, exposed brick, floor-to-ceiling windows, walk-in closet, fireplace. Tam-Anh says it felt too good to be true, but they emailed the leasing agent anyway. “It’s even more magical in person,” the agent responded, inviting them to an open house to view the space. You can probably guess what happened next.

A “Scandi with a South African Twist” Style Home — House Tour

Name: Ivonne Meyer
Location: Woodstock — Cape Town, South Africa
Size: 1,550 square feet
Years lived in: 10 years, owned

After many years of renting a bedroom in this very house, Ivonne luckily had the opportunity to purchase the property when her friend relocated to Namibia and needed to sell. With no furniture of her own to begin with, Ivonne slept in the living room on just a mattress for the first few months. She had a simple trestle table and four wine crates that were truly multi-purpose; they could be chairs or side tables and even act as a ladder when stacked on top of each other! Nowadays, though, they’re used as bedside tables in Ivonne’s bedroom, and there are other pieces that have joined in. By living in the house first, Ivonne was able to make clever decisions when it came to both renovating and furnishing choices.

A Modern Refresh of a Victorian-Era Portland Home — House Tour

Name: Andy Barlow, and his cat Cavanaugh
Location: Eliot Neighborhood — Northeast Portland, Oregon
Size: 850 square feet
Years lived in: 2 years, renting

Andy and his cat Cav live in one unit of a Portland duplex that was built in 1890 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Andy is a multi-talented real estate agent, freelance interior designer, and professional home-stager, who never thought that he would end up living in and loving a 127-year old home. “Before moving here I never had any desire to live in a Victorian home. I was into more modern aesthetics, despite loving history. So, after I moved in and started to get a feel for the space, I had to figure out whether I could mix my love for mid-century lines into an 1890 Victorian.”

A Regular Furniture Rearranger’s Always Fresh St. Louis Rental — House Tour

Name: Amy Kuntz
Location: St. Louis, Missouri
Size: 2,000 square feet
Years lived in: 18 months, renting

Why stick with one living room when you can have ten? Amy Kuntz loves to change up her first-floor flat in St. Louis whenever she feels inspired, giving her Instagram followers a new, stylish look every few weeks. The Midwest native has had a thing for rearranging furniture ever since she was a kid, “I would move the furniture at my parents’ when my mom was at work,” Amy says. “There are so many ways to make your space feel new without having to go and spend a lot of money, and that’s one of my favorite things when my friends ask me to go help them design their space.”
