10 Projects to Make Your Home Smell Amazing for the Holidays

Believe it or not, every home has a signature scent that sets the tone for the rest of the space. It can be as simple as that favorite candle you burn regularly or the lingering aroma of your dyer sheets. It can also be something less-than-inviting, like your dog-odored rugs or the trash you forgot to take out yesterday. When it comes to your home’s scent, creating an inviting but not overwhelming fragrance is especially important during the holiday season when guests start turning your front stoop into a revolving door. So grab your eucalyptus, fresh herbs, citrus, and cinnamon sticks because we’ve got just the projects to make your senses feel all the holidays feels.

The Easiest & Cheapest DIY Art Project (Using Your Phone)

When it comes to making your own art, there is no shortage of project ideas. If you have artistic tendencies, you can likely take any idea or inspiration (online or IRL) and turn it into something worthy of that much-coveted spot on your gallery wall. However, if you have less-than-artistic tendencies, those ideas may be more likely to become Pinterest Fails than framed masterpieces. And that’s okay. My advice when it comes to DIY art is this: know your limits.

Maybe you don’t know your way around a paint brush and canvas, but I’ll bet you know your way around a smart phone – enough to take a photo and open it in an app, right? So instead of fussing over supplies at the art store, only to end up disappointed with yourself, how about an art project for the art-less…

I want nothing more than to have a lucrative side-gig to finance my extreme love of gift-giving, however, that’s just not in the cards at the moment. Make This Blanket Ladder In 3 Easy Steps (No Tools Required!) — Apartment Therapy Tutorials

When I was little, I always imagined building forts out of sticks or rafts with ropes to float down the river like the Boxcar Children or Huck Finn – completely not realizing that probably wouldn’t happen in suburban Florida. But I was always drawn to how people could create things with minimal supplies and loads of inventiveness. When it came time for this tutorial I remembered using Japanese square lashing for a no-weave wall hanging and realized, hey, lashings are used all the time to build simple structures! Surely it can support a few blankets. And guess what, friends, it totally can.

DIY to Try: How To Make Your Own Mudcloth — Apartment Therapy Tutorial

My love affair with mudcloth is well documented. If you are unfamiliar with the stuff, mudcloth is a somewhat heavy fabric, sewn in strips, and dyed naturally with mud. It usually has a graphic pattern of geometric lines and dots, in high contrast black and white. Given the process of making it, it’s no surprise that the real deal is also somewhat expensive. But, since it’s handmade, it’s also a good DIY project, without worry about screwing up too much or making it “perfect.”
