DIY to Try: How To Make Your Own Mudcloth — Apartment Therapy Tutorial

My love affair with mudcloth is well documented. If you are unfamiliar with the stuff, mudcloth is a somewhat heavy fabric, sewn in strips, and dyed naturally with mud. It usually has a graphic pattern of geometric lines and dots, in high contrast black and white. Given the process of making it, it’s no surprise that the real deal is also somewhat expensive. But, since it’s handmade, it’s also a good DIY project, without worry about screwing up too much or making it “perfect.”

Easy Ways to Hang a Tapestry In 20 Minutes or Less

Let’s talk tapestries. They’re the perfect solution for that big empty wall, for helping sound proof thin walls, for replacing headboards when headboards aren’t an option, and they’re typically pretty renter-friendly art. Most can be hung with a simple dowel rod and a nail or two. Maybe you just inherited a piece from your grandmother, or stumbled upon a brilliantly patterned textile at the flea market, or maybe you made your own wall hanging. Either way, you’ll probably need to hang it. Here are a few easy ways to get that beautiful masterpiece up on the wall for all the world (or at least your houseguests) to see.

Have We Reached Peak Moroccan?

It’s hard to pinpoint the exact moment everyone became obsessed with all things Moroccan—poufs, lanterns, tagines, tea tables. But when it comes to textiles, the picture is a little bit clearer. A few years ago, interiors with Beni Ourain rugs started popping up in shelter magazines (and on websites like this one!). Then in a watershed design moment, if you will, West Elm released the Souk Rug back in 2012 or so, and it was on.

The Unstoppable 2017 Textile Trends…and What’s Next

Textiles can really make a room, but they can also be pretty polarizing once you’re talking patterns beyond a simple stripe or classic dot. Right now, there seems to be room for a little bit of everything in the world of fabric: old world toiles sit alongside bold geometrics at showrooms, and you can’t go far down the Pinterest rabbit hole without stumbling upon a global-inspired ikat or an African mudcloth.

Pillows and throws are easy enough to switch out a couple times a year, but when you’re talking upholstery, curtains and wall coverings, those are investments that need to last longer than a season or two. So we tapped three tastemakers with expertise in fabric—Wendy Estes, owner of online home decor boutiques Layla Grayce and Zinc Door , Kate Reynolds, co-owner of textile showroom Studio Four NYC , and Christina Bryant, founder and CEO of St. Frank —for intel on what’s going gangbusters now, what’s coming down the pipeline and what just won’t quit (but in a good way).
