A 400-Square-Foot Studio Oozing All Things Sass, Beyoncé & Llamas — House Tour

Name: Emily Eaton
Location: South Minneapolis, Minnesota
Size: 400 square feet
Years lived in: 6 years, renting

Emily’s south Minneapolis space may be teeny, but it packs a one-of-a-kind punch, the likes of which you may have never seen. All small space dwellers are faced with the reality of their situation — some conquer and others fail. Throughout Emily’s six years in this space she has clearly conquered the common challenges by mastering the art of storage, organization, and the daily task of bed making. And she keeps things fun and fresh by rearranging her furniture and large art collection regularly.

Rihanna Inspired This Dark, Moody Glam Apartment — House Tour

Name: Jennifer Li
Location: Lakeside — Oakland, California
Size: 440 square feet
Years lived in: 6 months, rented

When I asked Jennifer about the inspiration behind her Oakland apartment, she turned on her TV and played the music video for Rihanna and DJ Khaled’s “Wild Thoughts.” In it, Rihanna dances around in a bedroom covered in emerald-green walls full of lush, dangling vines. This specific scene in the video prompted Jennifer to take a screenshot and match the paint color at a local Home Depot, which she would use to paint the wall at her studio’s entry. “It looked so deliciously sumptuous and sexy — both Rihanna and the wall,” she says.

A Colorful, Maximalist Mini-Museum in Massachusetts — House Tour

Name: Hank Scollard and his two cats
Location: Inman Square — Cambridge, Massachusetts
Size: 1,200 square feet
Years lived in: 16 years; Rented

When Hank Scollard was a child growing up in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn, Michigan, his mom would take him to open houses. The family wasn’t looking to move, but Hank’s mom loved to glimpse how others lived in and decorated their homes. These informal “house tours,” along with his mother’s penchant for DIY projects, undoubtedly influenced Hank, who grew up to be an architect and repurposer of objects within the home. Now Hank has come full circle, opening up his Inman Square apartment to a tour. Filled with the best and most bizarre, Hank’s home is a small slice of history and, like all collections, is subjective to the eye and heart of its curator.

A Quirky, Retro, Playful and Unexpected Home — House Tour

Name: Glenda and David Pedersen
Location: Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue — Quebec, Canada
Size: 1,200 square feet
Years lived in: 18 years, owned

Glenda — a most charming woman — finds the best inspiration from her dreams when it comes to decorating. She has a thing for the quirky, the retro, the playful, and the unexpected. This makes her and her husband’s home full of delightful surprises, like the many puppets and figurines in various rooms, the miniature train, the beach wood chandelier in the dining room, the mirror collection in the living room, the wood branch handles and pulls on the kitchen cupboards, and all the other vintage elements from different eras scattered around the house in an imaginative — yet somehow still cohesive — manner.

The “Perfect Little” Apartment for a NYC Couple — House Tour

Name: Irmak Karayal and Spencer Ramsey
Location: East Harlem — New York, New York
Size: 550 square feet
Years Lived In: 1 year, renting

“Everyone who steps into our apartment says something along the lines of, ‘This is the perfect little apartment for you guys!’ We hear the words ‘perfect little’ all the time,” says Irmak — one half of the couple that lives in this East Harlem apartment. This description couldn’t be more true. While this is a “little” apartment (550 square feet), Irmak and Spencer have found a way to turn this space into a “perfect” representation of the people they love and the places they’ve been.

This NYC Home Is Like a Mini Pop Culture Museum — House Tour

Name: Jeanie Engelbach and pup Tater Tot
Location: East Village — New York, NY
Size: 900 square feet
Years lived in: 24 years, renting

“I’ve been collecting since I was five years old,” admits Jeanie Engelbach, “and coupled with a design aesthetic based on my nine-year-old self — candy, comics and cartoons — the apartment feels like a tightly curated mini pop culture museum.” Multi-colored PEZ dispensers, bobble heads, and teacups fill every corner. Bold colors are painted on walls. Animal print details reflect the dreams of her childhood. Visiting Jeanie’s NYC apartment is like stepping into a space outfitted by the likes of Pee-Wee Herman and Betsey Johnson.

A Maximalist, “Boho Luxe” London Apartment — House Tour

Name: Alex Crabtree and her husband Adrian
Location: London
Size: 900 square feet
Years lived in: 1 1/2 years

A print in the bathroom declares: “Your home should tell the story of who you are, and be a collection of what you love.” And this exuberant, eclectic London apartment, lavishly filled with collections and curios, beautifully tells the story of property, kitchen and interiors public relations expert Alex Crabtree. With a career spanning work in the music industry, fashion (she worked for Biba in its early years) and more recently interiors, Alex’s interests and tastes are wide-ranging.”I’m always looking, and I draw inspiration from everywhere — but whatever it is, it has to stop me in my tracks,” she smiles.

A Maximalist, Layered Lounge in Oakland — House Tour

Name: Kristin Peters and Corey McLaughlin, cats Gracie and Zoey
Location: Redwood Heights — Oakland, California
Size: 1,500 square feet
Years lived in: 13 years, owned

When Kristin and Corey first looked at their Oakland home when it was on the market, they walked away from it. Kristin fell in love with the living room views, but Corey couldn’t get past the ugly facade and outdated design. When the house kept popping up in their searches (but with a lower price), they agree to take another look. This time, they realized that the bones and structure of the home were in good condition — it just needed a dramatic face-lift. Kristin had a vision of how she could make it a lovely home for the couple, and since she loves a challenge, they dove right in.

An Innkeeper’s Impossibly Dreamy Attic Apartment in New Orleans — House Tour

Name: Melinda McSpadden
Location: Garden District — New Orleans, Louisiana
Size: 1,300 square feet
Years lived in: 11 months; the apartment is one of the perks of being a live-in innkeeper

The setting for Melinda McSpadden’s life is dripping with Southern charm — lush greenery and a canopy of century-old oaks surround a Queen Anne-style mansion built in 1890 in the heart of New Orleans’ picturesque Garden District. On a summer morning, a ceiling fan turns lazily above rattan chairs on a wrap-around porch. The scene is just begging for someone to sit and sip a glass of ice-cold lemonade.

A Newly Remodeled, Maximalist Philadelphia Home — House Tour

Name: Rachael, Rob and Frankie Wetherington + Liza Minnelli the Cat
Location: East Kensington — Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Size: 1,600 square feet
Years Lived In: 5 years, owned

p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica}

Rachael and Rob’s first house wasn’t their “dream home” when they bought it five years ago, right before their wedding. But with a giant yard in the city and an open floor plan on a corner in a neighborhood they loved, it had enough potential to be pretty darn close. The biggest issue was it needed work after sitting vacant for a few years. A longtime friend of the couple, Will Stichter of HYMY Industries, helped remodel their open-air kitchen to be the entertaining oasis it is now. And after two years of work — and a cabinet or two falling off the wall (breaking every piece of china they owned) — the remodel was finished. What started out as a not-quite-a-dream-home is now a dreamy home perfect for the couple and their young daughter Frankie.
