Cleaning Time Capsule: Vintage Ads to Remind Us All What It Was Like Back in the Day

Many of the cleaning brands we use today have been around for decades—some have even been around since the 1800s—and that means that over the years, they’ve seen many a marketing campaign. Flipping through old magazine ads for the products we still know and love is quite the experience, and so is watching vintage television ads from generations ago. Some are questionable, some are hilarious, and some, surprisingly, aren’t really all that different from how they are today.

The Kitchen & Cleaning Tool Brand I Always Go Back To

In the era of fast fashion and mass manufacturing, we’re getting used to the “well this is crap” moment, usually accompanied by exasperated sighs from wary shoppers. No doubt you know it well: It’s the moment when you realize that thing you bought, well… it’s crap. It broke after one use or, even worse, never really worked well enough to begin with.

We Put These Cheaper, Generic Magic Erasers to the Test Against Mighty Mr. Clean — Cleaning Test Lab

When it comes to cleaning, I believe in magic. Ever since Mr. Clean magic erasers hit the scene, I’ve been using them to tackle some of the tougher jobs around the house. But I recently discovered that there are generic versions of magic erasers—it’s just a non-proprietary material called melamine foam—that can be scooped up for cheaper than the Mr. Clean brand. But do they work just as well? I wanted to test it for myself and put each of these sponges through the ringer.

Melamine Foam: A Seriously Cheap Fix For Your Magic Eraser Habit

Magic erasers are magical. I use them to clean many, many things in my house, especially the stuff that can only be described as grimy. They make light work of certain tasks; yes, you can use all-purpose cleaner and a rag to clean the baseboards, but a magic eraser is so much more efficient. They’re so awesome that paying almost a dollar a piece seems worth it. But what if I told you that there was a cheap fix for your magic eraser habit, one that would make it guilt-free to reach for one every time you clean?
