10 Bathrooms Inspired by Design’s Most Daring Decade

The phrase “’80s bathroom” may conjure a bit of a shudder — along with images of cracked square tile and particle-board vanities. But right now we’re feeling inspired by an entirely different kind of ’80s bathroom, one not necessarily built in the ’80s but definitely inspired by the decade.

Lately, the influence of Memphis — the postmodern collective that defined avant-garde design during that time — is everywhere, so it seems inevitable that those bright colors, speckled finishes, and playful geometric shapes would eventually make their way to the bathroom. The resulting spaces might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but you have to agree that they’re anything but boring.

Make This DIY Toilet Spray for the Stinkiest Seat in the House — Apartment Therapy Tutorials

Walking out of a stinky bathroom has got to be on everyone’s top 5 list of cringe-worthy moments. Lighting matches or using spray aerosol are common remedies to mask the smell. Matches are great, but you can’t use them in airplane bathrooms. And aerosol? Don’t get me started – that stuff is poison. A new-ish product growing in popularity (which might seem like an April Fools joke) is Poo-Pouuri Before-You-Go toilet spray. It works wonders, but it’s also kinda pricey. So why not make your own. A few bottles of essential oils, rubbing alcohol, and an empty spray or perfume bottle and you’ve already got everything you need to get started.

Before and After: First-time DIYers Rescue a Fishy, Fugly Floral Small Bathroom

“When we first moved in, our bathroom was COVERED in flowers,” reports Kathy Davies , a wedding and portrait photographer. She and her husband, James Binder, bought this 1950s tri-level house in Michigan two years ago and have slowly been remodeling parts of it. She continues describing what an outdated nightmare the small bathroom was when they purchased the house: “The floor, the curtains, the wallpaper… and not a pretty modern type of floral pattern. It was a terrible, yellowish, old-looking floral pattern. It also smelled like fish haha. This was our first major DIY and is now one of my favorite rooms in the house!”

The Decorative Trick That Transformed How I Feel About My Bathroom

For the longest time, I thought there was only one solution for rugs in the bathroom: the traditional bath mat. I always struggled to find something I liked enough. Everything was either too fuzzy and nubby, or too bland in terms of design, as I like to add a punch of color via rugs in my all-beige bathroom to liven things up. That is, until I refreshed my space this past summer and went in a completely different direction.

I Found the Perfect Plant For My Dark Cave of a Bathroom

I’m pretty obsessed with the look of plant-filled homes, unfortunately, every variety of greenery I’m ever interested in seems to require full sunlight (I’m looking at you fiddle leaf fig). My apartment—especially the bedroom and bathroom—doesn’t get great light thanks in part to only having windows in the front and one side of the condo. Combine that with the windows I do have being mostly shaded by giant banyan trees and my plant parent future wasn’t looking too bright. However, I took a chance on a snake plant in my recent bathroom makeover , and guess what? It’s still kicking months later with little to no attention or sunshine.

If you live in a home or apartment of a certain age, chances are good that your walls are covered in the 4″x4″ ceramic tile that was at one point considered de rigueur for a bathroom.
