Small Details To Make You Really Love Your Rental Bathroom

It’s surprising what a difference a nice bathroom makes. Unfortunately, many renters (like myself), have to work with whatever setup our leased homes offer. Usually this is a very standard, neutral, easy-to-clean but very boring space, with minimal function — certainly nothing special. Luckily, there are a few things that you can do to make a bathroom slightly more useful for your needs, and even slightly more stylish.

We Can’t Get Enough of These Classic Black & White Bathrooms

One of my favorite new looks for the bathroom is actually a very old look: black and white. There’s no color combo more classic, and the bathroom, typically a smaller space, is perfect for simple, high-drama design statements. Whether you go for contrasting black and white tile, or modernize the look with minimal, matte black fixtures, this is a style that’s sure to please — and to stand the test of time.

Square Tile is the New Subway Tile and We’re Not Sorry

Subway tile is everywhere. For years it’s held sway over our bathrooms and kitchens, and for good reason: it’s classic, it’s inexpensive, it’s easy to install, and it matches practically everything. But all those things are also true for subway tile’s somewhat less prominent cousin too: the humble 4″ x 4″ square tile. Combined with dark grout, it feels at once classic and fresh. It has all the versatility of subway tile — and you’re not tired of it yet.

Major Bang for Your Buck: Truly Transformative Under $100 Bathroom Improvements

(Image credit: Boo & Maddie )

$100 is a perfect amount. It’s enough of a splurge to make a big difference in a room. You can create a focal point, cover something extremely ugly, or just make the space a whole lot more livable. But, if you decide to do a full room renovation later on, you won’t feel bad for putting a ton of money into it earlier. Here are some amazing projects that show what’s possible, for very little bank.

Before & After: A Crumbling Apartment Bathroom Gets a New Lease on Life — Sweeten

As a connoisseur of all things vintage, I am certainly not immune to the appeal of an old-school peach-tiled bathroom, but this one had seen better days. The tiles were cracked and patched in mismatched colors, the toilet was one of those tankless numbers where you always feel like you’re going to fall over backwards, and the flooring (almost definitely not original) was more gas station bathroom than mid-century dream. Emily, a homeowner new to New York, wanted a clean, bright, and modern update to this small space — one that would feel classic and not cramped.

This Old But Updated Trend Brings Quiet Luxury Back to Your Bathroom

When I think of seated bathroom vanities of the past, I think of Hollywood moments with blazing makeup lights and large egos. Today’s versions are a little more understated with quieter styling — less altars of overt glam and more mindful meditation spots. Instead of rushing to get ready each morning, they encourage sitting down, taking a breath, and doing something nice for yourself.

Before & After: A Sleek, Modern Update to a Tiny Bathroom — Sweeten

When Maria and Eric bought their two-bedroom apartment in Queens, they knew the bathroom would need an overhaul. Moldering tile and aging, mismatched features meant the bathroom’s aesthetics weren’t great, but the real issue in this small space was a serious lack of storage. So they set about turning a decrepit space that had seen better days into a bright, modern bathroom — and added a few clever storage solutions along the way.

Before & After: A Wildly Outdated (We’re Talking Shell Sinks Here) Bathroom Totally Transforms

Jesse’s bathroom was not only leaving a lot to be desired aesthetically, it had some major functionality issues as well. Once they decided to drag their bathroom kicking and screaming out of the dregs of the ’80s, they encountered a little bit more than they bargained for with the plumbing. In the end, however, living a shower-less life paid off as their bathroom is one heck of a stunner.
