Gardening not only benefits you physically and emotionally, it can also feed your family and drive a business. With a little research, you can learn exactly what you need, which will keep you from spending money on seeds you can’t use, or unnecessary equipment.

When laying sod, it is important that you do it correctly. Be sure to get your soil prepared before you start laying the new sod. Pull any weeds and break up any clods of soil. Compress the soil lightly yet firmly, and make certain it’s flat. Water the soil until it is saturated. Lay the sod in rows, and make sure the joints do not overlap. Sod should be firm and have an even, flat surface without gaps. Sod has to be watered daily for two weeks, and then it can be rooted.

TIP! When planting perennials, seek out those that are resistant to slugs. If slugs or snails find their favorite perennials in your garden, they’ll snack all night.

If you want the best results, you need to choose the right soil. Depending on what kind of plants you want in your garden, the soil might or might not be adapted. For special requirements, you can build separate areas with soil that is right for certain plants.

Fall edibles are a wonderful addition to your garden. Instead of using regular clay pots this year for planting lettuce and kale, try a pumpkin container instead! Simply cut the pumpkin open at the top, so you can remove the seeds and insides. After that, spray Wilt-Pruf along the edges and on the inside of the pumpkin, so it doesn’t rot. After this is completed, it is time to plant!

Pre-soak seeds overnight in a dark place. Place a couple seeds in each container, then fill it close to full with water. The seeds will get the hydration they need to start growing. The seeds will most likely survive and mature this way.

TIP! If you see mildew that is powdery, stay away from expensive chemicals to treat it. Try mixing a little liquid soap with some baking soda in water.

Deciduous shrubs need protection from the cold. Cold weather significantly affects these plants, especially if they are in pots. Try to tie the tops all together and cover them with a sheet, large piece of cloth, or blanket. This is better than using plastic to wrap the plant, as more air can circulate.

Divide your irises. The more you divide clusters of irises, the more your irises will multiply. Uproot bulbous irises if the flowers have wilted. The bulbs split in your hand, then you replant them, and they will most likely flower next year. Use a knife to divide the rhizomes. Cut new pieces from the outside and discard the old center. At the least, each piece will need to have one strong offshoot. Replant your new rhizome pieces as soon as you have finished the cuttings.

Research, hard work, and some dedication are the main requirements. All the work will be worthwhile, when you experience the satisfaction of a thriving garden established by your own effort.
