Gardening is more than decorating. They are not only a simple hobby either. It is an activity which offers the gardener opportunities for achieving serenity and gaining a greater appreciation of life. Especially if you are good at it, its effects are profound.

Using a shovel in clay soil is a lot of work, not only is the clay hard, but it will stick to the shovel and make it twice as hard to handle. Get better results in clay by rubbing car wax or floor wax onto the shovel, then buff off and dig. By waxing the shovel head, the clay will not be able to adhere to the surface.

TIP! Bring some plants into your home to protect them against winter weather. Maybe you could pick out the most expensive plants or the most hardy ones.

It is very important to keep the weeds from taking over in your garden. If you’re not careful, weeds can take over your beautiful garden, ruining it. To aid in this venture, you might want to use white vinegar. White vinegar is a fantastic weed killer! If you are too busy to pull weeds by hand, make a white vinegar solution and keep it handy for a quick spray when needed.

A simple way to lower the alkaline content of your soil is to dilute it with coffee grounds. This affordable trick will give back the acid that your dirt requires. You will notice that your vegetables and greens will have a stronger taste.

Try dousing weeds in your garden with boiling water to get rid of them. This is a safe way to eliminate weeds, as this will not damage the soil. Although this method is organic, it does pose a danger to your plants. The extreme heat of the water will cause damage to the weeds’ roots, which will stop them from growing any more.

TIP! If you are gardening, be wary of stink bugs in your garden, especially in the autumn. These destructive pests enjoy many kinds of fruit, as well as beans, peppers and tomatoes.

Mint is a very tasty herb that has a tendency to run wild in the garden if not kept in check. Stunt their growth a little by planting your mint into a garden container or large pot instead. By using a separate containment unit, you are limiting the plant’s ability to spread its roots and subsequently grow like wildfire. You can even plant the entire pot so that it still looks just like another plant in your garden.

Divide your irises. You can get more irises by dividing the overgrown clumps. When the foliage dies, take the bulbous irises and lift them. The iris bulbs should easily split apart in your hand. Once you replant them, they will have a good flower show the following year. Divide up the rhizomes with a knife. Cut the new pieces from its outside and dispose of the older center. If done properly, each piece that remains for planting should have a minimum of one viable offshoot. The quicker you can replant your cuttings, the better chances they will reappear next season.

Take what you learned from this article and bring your garden back to life. When the day comes that your plants are tall and smiling, you will be too. Gardening may change your life if you let it, now get started.
