Horticulture is a very satisfying hobby, and it provides many benefits. Regardless of what you grow, cultivating and caring for plants brings a special kind of satisfaction. The ideas here can provide some horticulture guidance, and give you a little hand as you get started growing your own special garden.

For the right results, get the right type of soil. You should choose your soil depending on the plants that you are going to plant. It can happen where one artificial area is designated to have just one type of soil.

TIP! Sod should be laid properly. Get your soil ready before you lay your sod.

Before you plant anything in your garden, have the soil checked. You can do a soil sample analysis for an affordable fee and then know what you need to properly treat your soil with so you can grow the best plants. Before you ruin any crops, make sure you do this. Soil can be analyzed at a lot of cooperative extension offices, so make sure you plan accordingly.

Fall edibles are a wonderful addition to your garden. Rather than using clay pots or planters for your lettuce and kale, plant them in a pumpkin! Once you cut an opening at the top of the pumpkin and scoop out the insides, spray the inside and edges with Wilt-Pruf to keep the pumpkin from rotting. When you finish this, you can plant!

Coffee Grounds

TIP! Choose plants that will give you the most yield at harvest time. In many cases, a disease-resistant or cold-tolerant hybrid will produce a higher yield than a traditional variety.

If a test indicates that your soil is very alkaline, you can mix the dirt with used coffee grounds. Using coffee grounds is a less expensive way to make your soil more acidic than trying to replace your topsoil. This simple act can lead to vegetables that taste better and look more appealing.

Start a new garden from seeds. The most “green” way to create a new garden is starting from seeds. The planters used to hold nursery plants are generally not made from eco-friendly materials, and thus get thrown into landfills. Starting from seeds, or buying from one of the few nurseries that use biodegradable planters, prevents this.

Be aware of the optimum time frame for harvesting vegetables. Different veggies have different windows of time in which they should be picked; it is during this period that the vegetable is most flavorful. For instance, for the best flavor, zucchini and baby peas should be picked when they are young. The opposite is true of tomatoes. They taste their best if you allow them to ripen on the vine as long as possible. Simply educate yourself on what the best time is to harvest each of your garden vegetables.

If you want your children to enjoy your organic garden, plant some tasty strawberries. Children enjoy picking fresh fruit, especially if they can eat it right away.

As has been noted above, there are many rewards inherent in gardening. Even just working in the fresh air can lift your spirits. Utilizing some of the information that has been provided can help you to see that horticulture is wonderful and interesting.
