With a push to eat healthier and to save money at the grocery store, many people are turning to organic horticulture to meet their needs. Read this article to find out what you need to do to get started. Simply follow through with our handy tips and tricks and take advantage of these great results.

Your soil needs to be of good quality before you start a garden. You can do a soil sample analysis for an affordable fee and then know what you need to properly treat your soil with so you can grow the best plants. There are numerous places to find this service, such as your local Cooperative Extension office. The cost is well worth it to avoid a potentially ruined crop.

TIP! Trying to shovel through clay soil can be extremely difficult and tiresome. Take the hard work out of using a shovel in clay soil by rubbing a light coat of car or floor wax over the surface with a clean cloth and buff the surface.

You must be sure to remove all of the weeds that grow in your garden. Weeds steal nutrients from plants, robbing a garden of its potential harvest. To help with weed destruction, use white vinegar. White vinegar will definitely kill the weeds! Keep a solution of vinegar diluted with water on hand to spray on weeds.

Before you start planting your garden, plan it out. Doing this makes it easier to keep track of where you planted what when you first start to see sprouts. This is important, because different plants require different care.

Your garden can really benefit from evergreens featuring berries. Your yard will then have bright spots of color all year round, which is especially cheerful in the winter when all of your other flora is bare or colorless. Plants which you can purchase that offer color during the winter are the Winterberry, the Common Snowberry, the American Holly, and the American Cranberrybush.

TIP! Turn your tool handles into convenient rulers. Tools with substantial handles, like rakes, hoes and large shovels are great for taking measurements.

Know when is the best time to harvest your vegetables. Every vegetable has a proper time to be picked in order to capture the perfect flavor. For example, zucchini and baby peas are best picked young. Contrarily, tomatoes should be left on the vine until maximum ripeness has occurred. Take some time to learn about the best harvest time for the vegetables that you have growing.

Helpful Insects

Don’t use pesticides that aren’t meant to kill specific types of garden pests. These kinds of pesticides kill the helpful insects that destroy the pests. The helpful insects in your garden can be highly sensitive to pesticides and if their population goes down, the harmful insect population will grow. This can result in your using more pesticides to eradicate the problem.

TIP! Purchase a wheelbarrow, and a kneeling stool to use in your garden. Using a large portion of your time near or on the ground working on your garden puts a huge strain on your knees; therefore, having a portable, lightweight garden stool will greatly assist you in making gardening easier on them.

As you have learned before, getting your organic garden perfected just takes a little bit of time and patience. Use what you learned today, and apply it to your garden to see how much of a difference it makes. It doesn’t matter what you’re trying to grow, the tips you learned can help you be successful.
