You probably know quite a bit about organic foods, whether you have read about them, or noticed them at your local supermarket. You are probably aware of which foods are organic. They have special packaging and cost a fortune. Look at the following advice to learn how to start an organic garden.

Plants need ample amounts of CO2 to reach their maximum growth. A major portion of plants grow their best in an environment with a saturated level of CO2. Greenhouses typically provide plants with high levels of CO2. Higher CO2 levels can provide optimal conditions for growing plants.

TIP! Sod should be laid correctly. Before laying the sod, the soil must be prepared.

Ensuring your plants are both dry and aerated is a great way to keep them healthy. Damp leaves can lead to plant disease and parasites. A common parasite to plants is fungi. It is possible to control fungi by using fungicide sprays. However, these sprays should be used before issues become apparent.

Irises should be divided. You can increase your stock of irises by dividing up overgrown clumps. When the foliage dies it’s time to lift the bulbous irises out of the ground. You will be able to split the bulb easily and replant it to get more flowers next year. Use a knife to carefully divide rhizomes. Cut the new pieces from its outside and dispose of the older center. Each piece needs one strong offshoot. Plant immediately.

Be consistent with garden fertilization. Composted manure is effective in raising healthy plants, and commercial fertilizer products are safer and more convenient. There are numerous types of fertilizers available. What type you select is less of a concern; any kind of fertilizer is better than none.

TIP! Digging in clay soil with a shovel can be very difficult. The clay isn’t easy to work with and will adhere to the shovel, which only makes the problem worse.

Look for targeted pesticides instead of using popular but damaging broad-spectrum products. These pesticides will kill every type of pest in your garden, including beneficial bugs that eat garden pests. In fact, beneficial insects are more likely to die than pests if you spray these types of pesticides. As the population of “good” bugs dwindles, your garden may become overrun with pests. You will need even more pesticides to deal with the problem, and it will never really go away.

Plant items with fall color. That doesn’t have to be it though. The foliage in the fall probably exudes more color than any other season. Maple, Beech and Dogwood trees are available in a number of fall colors, varying from bright yellow to rich crimson. Cotoneaster, barberry and hydrangea can provide vibrant color if you are considering shrubs for your garden.

If you have a problem with your dog disturbing your garden, you can repel him by spraying perfume or other scents on the grass near the edge. This will help mask the scents that attract your dog, and will make your garden a less interesting place for your pet to be.

TIP! When selecting among several varieties of a plant, choose the ones that will produce the largest yield. Hybrids are usually hardier in terms of disease and weather resistance, and are designed to produce more.

Growing your garden at home might not be the most convenient thing for you, but you will save a lot of money and always have the confidence that what you’re eating and feeding your family is as fresh and as healthy as possible. Use the tips you’ve learned here and get started on your garden today.
