The Things Living Alone Will Teach You About Yourself

I’m a firm believer in the idea of everyone living alone at least once in their life. In fact, I’m in the solo-living-forever-if-I-can camp. Not only can it be a fun and enjoyable experience for most folks, I think you can also learn a lot about yourself. Here are six of the most important things living alone can teach you about you.

Here’s What This Weekend’s New Moon Means For Your Home

With the Sun traveling through Scorpio this past month, and meeting up for a sparklingly potent New Moon on 11/18, it’s time to roll up your sleeves, dig into the trenches, and get ready for some serious purging. But this lunar energy lends the zodiac’s Phoenix sign a softer, sweeter edge. Let change feel like simply slipping off an old duvet cover. Easy, breezy, and ready for brand new dreams.

From Morning to Night: 5 Ways to Practice Gratitude Today

With Thanksgiving fast approaching, many people are starting to think about the things they’re thankful for. But sometimes—especially when things get stressful and you’re dealing with a major life change—it can be hard to get into the right frame of mind or even remember the things you’re grateful for. But practicing gratitude doesn’t have to be a difficult, time-consuming thing—you can totally challenge yourself to be more grateful and more mindful with minimal effort (and maximum good feelings).

What Your Birth Month Says About Your Home

The driving force in how you decorate your home—and really just how you live in it—is dictated most often by your personality. Who you are as a person impacts what art you hang, how you set up your rooms, how often you host people, your cleaning tendencies, and how you unwind at home. But your personality can also be impacted by when you were born , and much like your zodiac sign, the month you were born in can reveal a lot about you.

I’ve Found the Secret to Tackling My Most-Hated Chore

I don’t know about you, but my sense of time is pretty bad. Like “I’ll be ready in 5 minutes” is almost always a lie, bad. And when I call in a to-go order, I set an alarm because I will severely over-estimate how long “15 to 20 minutes” can be.

What it Was Like Living Above a Whole Foods for a Year — Personal Essay

As we crossed the Mississippi river into downtown, I overflowed into the passenger seat, seven months pregnant with my first son. My husband Tim, who was dropping me off at work, slowed down at a yellow light, rolling to a full stop in front of a new apartment development above a Whole Foods. While he looked the brick highrise up and down, I chirped in typical idealist fashion: “Wouldn’t it be fun to live somewhere like this someday? I don’t even care about owning a house, I just want to live somewhere fun and easy.”

Get Anthropologie’s Signature Scent for Less With These Budget Alternatives

Last week, I shared my adoration for Capri Blue’s Volcano, Anthropologie’s signature scent . The $28 candle is one of my personal little luxuries at home. I don’t spend a ton of money on takeout, nor do I regularly have expensive fresh cut flowers (I prefer $4 eucalyptus bunches from Trader Joe’s), but I do tend to splurge on candles and I’m not sorry about it. I do, however, completely understand how spending nearly $30 on some scented wax is a bit extra — as did some of our readers who offered up some Volcano dupes.

If You’ve Always Wondered Why Anthropologie Smells So Good, It’s Because of This Candle

Anthropologie is set up in a way that it’s not just a “store” but a “shopping experience.” It’s a place you stroll through, linger around, dream of living in. Part of that magical experience? The just-strong-enough aroma that fills the air, luring you across the impeccably styled threshold. I always thought the retailer’s sweet smell was a perfect marriage of all the candles they were burning throughout the store. But as it turns out, it’s just one candle (not by count, rather by scent).
