Our living rooms wear a lot of hats: we watch TV, entertain friends, have conversations and spend time reading in them. Sometimes they double as home offices, playrooms for kids or even dining rooms, too. I Bet You Can Tackle Your Cluttered Living Room in Just 20 Minutes, and Here’s How — September Sweep

People are surprised to know that the hardest-working weapon in my cleaning arsenal is my phone’s built-in timer. It’s a workhorse for two reasons: First, because I find it easier to muster up the energy to get chores done when I give myself a mental limit. “You only have to clean for 20 minutes, Taryn. You’ll be done just in time for Jeopardy.”

Before & After: Finding Space for a Third Bedroom, Beautifully — Sweeten

Buying an apartment in New York often involves a level of compromise. When Deeksha and Joe moved from D.C. to New York, along with their three-month-old son, their dream was to find a three-bedroom apartment. Reality was a spacious apartment in Washington Heights, with gorgeous views of the river — and only two bedrooms. But in the apartment’s L-shaped living room, they saw an opportunity.

Before and After: A Dark Maroon Living Room’s Bright Awakening

Despite the fact that every room in this house was dark and the living room was a deep, almost-brown maroon color, Andrea (a fashion blogger over at Blonde Bedhead ) could see this home’s potential. A bold move, considering this is her first house! “I was your typical millennial, avoiding home ownership for years, choosing the mobile life of apartment rentals. I moved away from Michigan briefly to work in Chicago and while it took a few years to realize, I love this state and my community — and have no desire to move,” wrote Andrea in her house tour . The first thing this millennial did after closing? Paint. Now…this living room’s future looks bright!

Coffee Table or Ottoman? Both! 12 Double Duty Hybrids to Consider — Annual Guide 2017

Here’s why I propose everyone have at least one cocktail ottoman in their lifetime (and why I should take my own advice): Every night, I sit down on my sofa and I put my feet up on my wood coffee table. It’s hard as a rock, and it certainly does not offer a comfy spot to cushion my heels which leads me to clear the table top to make room for a pillow so I can finally be comfortable. Just imagine if I were to instead buy a coffee table that is also an ottoman and therefore already has a plush, pillowy surface for me to kick back, relax, and rest my feet? And it can serve as additional seating when I need it to? Win-win. (Contrary to popular belief, your guests shouldn’t sit on your coffee table. But they can sit on your coffee table if it’s also an ottoman.) Here are a few top contenders if you’re in search of a cocktail ottoman like I am.

Design Dare: We Challenged Designers to Make These Tricky Decor Items Work

To someone like me—a person who has an appreciation for design but lacks the vision—the task seemed impossible. We asked three designers to take four items given to them in a “secret basket” that they might never have chosen on their own and turn them into a cohesive design that spoke to their signature style. It’s like those cooking competitions where chefs are asked to create a delectable dessert but the catch is they have to use duck sauce—where I would be thinking that was only meant for egg rolls and wonton strips, they mix it with pralines or sangria and give it a whole new purpose.

Built in 1928, this Michigan house came with plenty of architectural charm when Justin bought it, but it needed updating.
