Name: Peter Venuto
Location: The Plateau — Montreal, Quebec
Size: 1,500 square feet
Years lived in: 4 years, renting

Peter Venuto’s apartment was originally an Airbnb rental — which Peter himself once rented — but after the landlord grew tired of that setup, Peter managed to work out a deal with him and rent it as a “normal” living space. Today, the apartment showcases bright pink colors, metallic walls, and lots and lots of synthesizers. Peter Venuto’s apartment is not your typical home, but that’s what he loves about it.

Years lived in: 9 years, owned

Thirty years ago, Rob and Evelyn decided to move from the city to Muskoka, a desirable cottage town in Ontario to raise their kids. Now, they’re semi-retired and their kids are grown up, so they’ve taken advantage of “slower living” in their quiet town. The home also has a bunkie cottage (also known as a micro house) on the property, which isn’t short of style or spectacular antiques. The bunkie, which was built in 1959, was updated in 2011 to host friends and family.

Name: Jar and Kay (and their 5-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter)
Location: Quezon City, Philippines
Size: 375 square meters
Years lived in: Owned 3 months

Jar writes: “This is my wife and I’s first house together. We worked closely with our architect [Denise De Castro of DDC-Vida] to achieve a sustainable structure that would cater to a growing family. We were able to incorporate a lot of natural light and ventilation with a pocket garden in the middle of the home. We also have a rainwater harvest system that saves water for garden use. I’m a photographer and the architect wanted the house to be a ‘museum of light’ so she intentionally had light enter every room a different way. Solar panels also help us save on our electric bill.”

Size: 1615 square feet
Years lived in: 2.5 years, owned

p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica}

The beautiful house you see today is a far cry from how it looked when Sarah, a designer, purchased it two and a half years ago. She had chanced upon the property when it was totally derelict and still in the very beginning stages of a renovation. But it was the incredible Victorian staircase that sold Sarah on this 1901 naval cottage…and made her put in an offer.

An Interior Designer’s Simple & Modern Beijing Flat — House Tour

Name: Coro Urdaneta and Marco Cortavitarte
Location: Sanlitun — Beijing, China
Size: 1,500 square feet
Years lived in: 2 years, renting

It’s hard to find an expat in Beijing who doesn’t know about the Moka Bros , or the Venezuelan siblings behind it. When the restaurant first opened in 2013, it flipped the capital’s healthy café scene on its head, largely thanks to its refreshingly bold and trendy creative concept. The woman behind that design, and that of many other successful eateries in the city, is Coro Urdaneta of her namesake studio CoromotoAD . With more than 30 projects behind her in just a few years, it’s hardly a surprise that some of this design wisdom — as well as the furnishings themselves — would spill over into the Beijing home she shares with her husband Marco Cortavitarte.

Location: Sant Gervasi — Barcelona, Spain
Size: 1,184 square feet

Maria came to live in this apartment when she moved from Madrid with her two children two years ago. The apartment once belonged to her grandmother, so Maria remembers fondly coming to play here with her cousins when she was a toddler. The space looks quite different these days, though. When her grandmother lived here, it was heavy on dark wood. Maria has painted everything all white, transforming a once-dark home to a beautiful, bright and elegant space.
