Vintage Collectors Embrace Slower Living in a Mid-Century Cottage — House Tour

Name: Rob & Evelyn Stewart
Location: Washago — Ontario, Canada
Size: 1,100 square feet (plus a 350-square-foot bunkie)
Years lived in: 9 years, owned

Thirty years ago, Rob and Evelyn decided to move from the city to Muskoka, a desirable cottage town in Ontario to raise their kids. Now, they’re semi-retired and their kids are grown up, so they’ve taken advantage of “slower living” in their quiet town. The home also has a bunkie cottage (also known as a micro house) on the property, which isn’t short of style or spectacular antiques. The bunkie, which was built in 1959, was updated in 2011 to host friends and family.

A Cozy English Cottage in Illinois — House Tour

Name: Christine and Gabe Bridger , Emelia and Jenson
Location: Evanston, Illinois
Size: 3,000 square feet
Years lived in: 4 years, owned

During long summer walks, the Bridger family would peer into the windows of this 1920s cottage. When it finally became available, they purchased it without even stepping foot inside. The home was not period correct, nor was the space very functional, so they opened up every wall possible without losing the historic charm. During the renovation, the contractor team removed drywall in the kitchen and bathroom to deal with electrical issues. Upon seeing the beautiful brick behind the drywall, they made an “in the moment” decision to keep it (even with the possible heat loss and crumbling). They also used old bed posts for the kitchen island, barn wood as open shelving, and turned a bedroom into a charming sun room. This home was designed to be lived in and loved — it’s charming, cozy, and inviting.

Name: Jar and Kay (and their 5-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter)
Location: Quezon City, Philippines
Size: 375 square meters
Years lived in: Owned 3 months

Jar writes: “This is my wife and I’s first house together. We worked closely with our architect [Denise De Castro of DDC-Vida] to achieve a sustainable structure that would cater to a growing family. We were able to incorporate a lot of natural light and ventilation with a pocket garden in the middle of the home. We also have a rainwater harvest system that saves water for garden use. I’m a photographer and the architect wanted the house to be a ‘museum of light’ so she intentionally had light enter every room a different way. Solar panels also help us save on our electric bill.”

The beautiful house you see today is a far cry from how it looked when Sarah, a designer, purchased it two and a half years ago. She had chanced upon the property when it was totally derelict and still in the very beginning stages of a renovation.
